چکیده

The particle induced X-ray emission method is perfectly adapted to the study, by external beam, of art objects (like paintings) and allows non-destructive analysis of the atomic composition of the target. However, a strange phenomenon occurs during irradiation on some pigments: dark brownish stains appear, and this could be due to the formation of color centers. In fact, these darkening spots progressively fade out and disappear after a few weeks. Heat and UV light accelerate the decreasing process. The aim of this study is to understand the physical processes of the stain creation and to find a way to make stains disappear, avoiding any damage for the painting. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. A proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis of concentration of trace elements in varicose veins

Background: Proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) has been applied as reliable and improved techniques in this study to compare concentration of various trace elements in normal and abnormal varicose veins. Materials and Methods: Five samples from normal veins and 13 samples from varicose veins bombarded by 2.0 MeV energy proton beams produced by a Van de Graff accelerator in vacuum. T...

Radiation-induced color centers in La-doped PbWO 4 crystals

This report presents the result of a study on radiation-induced color center densities in La-doped lead tungstate (PbWO 4 ) crystals. The creation and annihilation constants of radiation-induced color centers were determined by using transmittance data measured for a PbWO 4 sample before and during 60Co c-ray irradiation at a dose rate of 15 rad/h. Following a model of color center kinetics, th...

Optical characteristics and mineral chemistry of colored fluorites from the mines of Mazandaran Province, and causes of their coloration

In order to understand the cause of coloration of fluorites, following experiments (UV-spectroscopy, irradiation by gamma ray and thermal bleaching) carried out on the colored and colorless fluorites from the mines of Mazandaran Province. All colored and colorless fluorites have absorption band in UV part of electromagnetic waves but deep-violet and brown fluorites have an absorption band in vi...

Analysis of Postage Stamps by Proton-Induced X-Ray Emission Spectrometry

Subtle variations in ink color and paper of postage stamps can affect their value and desirability to collectors and investors. Protoninduced Xray emission spectrometry (PIXE) is a generally nondestructive forensic analysis tool that reveals the concentrations of chemical elements in a sample. PIXE has been used for more than 30 years, sometimes in conjunction with other analytical methods, to ...

A PIXE study of vitrification of carnation in vitro culture

PIXE (Proton Induced X-ray Emission) is a well-known method for elemental analyses of specimens in applied studies. In this paper, we report results of an application of PIXE in trace-element analysis of normal and vitrified carnations in vitro culture. Experiments were performed to study the vitrification in connection with the trace elements in carnation tissues. About two hundred PIXE spectr...
